Federico Gaeta (1923–2007) was a Spanish algebraic geometer who was a student of Severi. He is considered to be one of the founders of linkage theory, on which he published several key papers. After many years abroad he came back to Spain in the 1980s. He spent his last period as a professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In gratitude to him, some of his personal and mathematically close persons during this last station, all of whom bene?ted in one way or another by his ins- ration, have joined to edit this volume to keep his memory alive. We o?er in it surveys and original articles on the three main subjects of Gaeta’s interest through his mathematical life. The volume opens with a personal semblance by Ignacio Sols and a historical presentation by Ciro Ciliberto of Gaeta’s Italian period. Then it is divided into three parts, each of them devoted to a speci?c subject studied by Gaeta and coordinated by one of the editors. For each part, we had the advice of another colleague of Federico linked to that particular subject, who also contributed with a short survey. The ?rst part, coordinated by E. Arrondo with the advice of R.M.

Britain and Empire, 1880-1945 traces the relationship between Britain and its empire during a period when the two spheres intersected with one another to an unprecedented degree. The story starts with the imperial expansion of the late nineteenth century and ends with the Second World War, at the end of which Britain was on the brink of decolonisation. The author shows how empire came to figure into almost every important development that marked Britain¿s response to the upheavals of the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. He examines its influence on foreign policy, party politics, social reforms, cultural practices, and national identity. At the same time, he shows how domestic developments affected imperial policies. Written in an engaging and accessible manner, this book: integrates British and imperial history in a single narrative provides a useful synthesis of recent historical research in the area analyses topics ranging from ideology and culture to politics and foreign affairs contains a chronology, glossary, who¿s who and guide to further reading Britain and Empire, 1880-1945 provides an up-to-date, accessible survey, ideal for students coming to the subject for the first time.

In Black France / France Noire, scholars, activists, and novelists address the paradox of race in France: the state does not acknowledge race as a meaningful category, but experiences of antiblack racism belie claims of color-blindness.

Ancient Perspectives PDF
By:Richard J. A. Talbert
Published on 2014-02-14 by University of Chicago Press

Ancient Perspectives encompasses a vast arc of space and time—Western Asia to North Africa and Europe from the third millennium BCE to the fifth century CE—to explore mapmaking and worldviews in the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. In each society, maps served as critical economic, political, and personal tools, but there was little consistency in how and why they were made. Much like today, maps in antiquity meant very different things to different people. Ancient Perspectives presents an ambitious, fresh overview of cartography and its uses. The seven chapters range from broad-based analyses of mapping in Mesopotamia and Egypt to a close focus on Ptolemy’s ideas for drawing a world map based on the theories of his Greek predecessors at Alexandria. The remarkable accuracy of Mesopotamian city-plans is revealed, as is the creation of maps by Romans to support the proud claim that their emperor’s rule was global in its reach. By probing the instruments and techniques of both Greek and Roman surveyors, one chapter seeks to uncover how their extraordinary planning of roads, aqueducts, and tunnels was achieved. Even though none of these civilizations devised the means to measure time or distance with precision, they still conceptualized their surroundings, natural and man-made, near and far, and felt the urge to record them by inventive means that this absorbing volume reinterprets and compares.

Cosmopolitanism and the Geographies of Freedom PDF
By:David Harvey
Published on 2009-08-22 by Columbia University Press

Liberty and freedom are frequently invoked to justify political action. Presidents as diverse as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush have built their policies on some version of these noble values. Yet in practice, idealist agendas often turn sour as they confront specific circumstances on the ground. Demonstrated by incidents at Abu Ghraib and Guant\u0087namo Bay, the pursuit of liberty and freedom can lead to violence and repression, undermining our trust in universal theories of liberalism, neoliberalism, and cosmopolitanism. Combining his passions for politics and geography, David Harvey charts a cosmopolitan order more appropriate to an emancipatory form of global governance. Political agendas tend to fail, he argues, because they ignore the complexities of geography. Incorporating geographical knowledge into the formation of social and political policy is therefore a necessary condition for genuine democracy. Harvey begins with an insightful critique of the political uses of freedom and liberty, especially during the George W. Bush administration. Then, through an ontological investigation into geography's foundational concepts& mdash;space, place, and environment& mdash;he radically reframes geographical knowledge as a basis for social theory and political action. As Harvey makes clear, the cosmopolitanism that emerges is rooted in human experience rather than illusory ideals and brings us closer to achieving the liberation we seek.

Richard Wright in a Post-Racial Imaginary PDF
By:William Dow,Alice Craven,Yoko Nakamura
Published on 2014-07-31 by Bloomsbury Publishing USA

In African American fiction, Richard Wright was one of the most significant and influential authors of the twentieth century. Richard Wright in a Post-Racial Imaginary analyses Wright's work in relation to contemporary racial and social issues, bringing voices of established and emergent Wright scholars into dialogue with each other. The essays in this volume show how Wright's best work asks central questions about national alienation as well as about international belonging and the trans-national gaze. Race is here assumed as a superimposed category, rather than a biological reality, in keeping with recent trends in African-American studies. Wright's fiction and almost all of his non-fiction lift beyond the mainstays of African-American culture to explore the potentialities and limits of black trans-nationalism. Wright's trans-native status, his perpetual |outsidedness| mixed with the |essential humanness| of his activist and literary efforts are at the core of the innovative approaches to his work included here.

Flavius Josephus is best known for his portraits of first-century conditions in Judaea: foreign and native rulers, religious groups and customs, geography, paraphrase of the Bible, apologetics, and the war with Rome. This is the first book to attempt a detailed and nuanced treatment of Josephus' Roman context: the significance of his works for understanding Rome in the late first century, and the significance of that Roman world for understanding Josephus.

The Last Communard PDF
By:Gavin Bowd
Published on 2016-06-21 by Verso Books

The story of an unexpected hero The Last Communard offers a brilliant, striking portrait of revolutionary Europe through a remarkable personal story. In 1871, Adrien Lejeune fought on the barricades of the Paris Commune. He was imprisoned for treason when the Commune fell and narrowly avoided execution for his role in the struggle for a new future. In later life, he immigrated to Soviet Russia, finding fame as a revolutionary icon. In his native country, he was vaunted as a hero, a touchstone of revolutions past during France’s interwar dramas. Abandoned by the Soviet regime, he languished, fortunes foundering, in Russia. Having led a long and extraordinary life, he died in Siberia in 1942 while fleeing Moscow as the Nazi armies swept across western Russia. It was another thirty years before he returned to Paris, his ashes coming to rest in the Communards’ plot of the Père Lachaise cemetery, on the centennial of the uprising, a symbol of France’s undying radical tradition. Gavin Bowd’s stunning narrative shows how an individual can be swept up in the fierce tides of history, and at the same time be defined by his own efforts to force those tides into a different, and better, course. Lejeune’s life captures war and revolution in a tumultuous period of European history. From the Hardcover edition.

Dangerous Liaisons PDF

Published on 2012 by

Given the fascination with the femme fatale in literature and films, the absence of her male counterpart in critical analysis is striking. The homme fatal certainly exists; yet he is depicted without a fitting term that carries the same negative connotations as the femme fatale, his danger potential is perceived as less threatening, or is even ignored entirely. Thus, he is able to escape heavy scrutiny from society and he is given a redeeming quality. For this study, three novels are specifically chosen to illustrate the rare occasions where both the femme and the homme fatals appear interactively in the same contexts. The novels are as follows: Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782), D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), and James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934). The analysis of the gender dynamics between the fatal/e figures reveals a deep seated misogyny embedded in the Western culture, which is reflected in Jacques Derrida's critical concept of phallogocentrism. The concept refers to the misogynistic hierarchical position occupied by males and females in the Western social order. In this hierarchy, the male takes the position of the privileged and superior sex, while the female is considered as the inferior other. The thesis further investigates the representation of the femme and the homme fatals in film adaptations and whether the misogynistic position is carried over to films. Five film adaptations are taken into consideration: Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and Cruel Intentions (1999) adapted from the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses; Lady Chatterley's Lover (1981) adapted from the same-titles novel; and two film versions of the Postman Always Rings Twice (1946 & 1981) again adapted from the same-titled novel. Similar to the novels, a misogynistic hierarchical position is reflected heavily in these films where the condemnation of the femme fatale is immensely increased, while the homme fatal is transformed into a romantic hero. This offers insights into the apparent misogyny still entrenched in today's society.
