Given the fascination with the femme fatale in literature and films, the absence of her male counterpart in critical analysis is striking. The homme fatal certainly exists; yet he is depicted without a fitting term that carries the same negative connotations as the femme fatale, his danger potential is perceived as less threatening, or is even ignored entirely. Thus, he is able to escape heavy scrutiny from society and he is given a redeeming quality. For this study, three novels are specifically chosen to illustrate the rare occasions where both the femme and the homme fatals appear interactively in the same contexts. The novels are as follows: Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782), D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), and James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934). The analysis of the gender dynamics between the fatal/e figures reveals a deep seated misogyny embedded in the Western culture, which is reflected in Jacques Derrida's critical concept of phallogocentrism. The concept refers to the misogynistic hierarchical position occupied by males and females in the Western social order. In this hierarchy, the male takes the position of the privileged and superior sex, while the female is considered as the inferior other. The thesis further investigates the representation of the femme and the homme fatals in film adaptations and whether the misogynistic position is carried over to films. Five film adaptations are taken into consideration: Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and Cruel Intentions (1999) adapted from the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses; Lady Chatterley's Lover (1981) adapted from the same-titles novel; and two film versions of the Postman Always Rings Twice (1946 & 1981) again adapted from the same-titled novel. Similar to the novels, a misogynistic hierarchical position is reflected heavily in these films where the condemnation of the femme fatale is immensely increased, while the homme fatal is transformed into a romantic hero. This offers insights into the apparent misogyny still entrenched in today's society.
