It surprises me that no one yet has discovered this manuscript; it has been hidden in plain view. It is timely to reveal it now. I have viewed the manners and the morals of your epoch and I judge it right that my voice again be heard. Like mine, your era is one of cynicism and ennui. Yours is, as mine was, an era in which the libertines publish their intrigues and liaisons - an era in which the libertines might press their advantage upon the innocent. Plus �a change... The Prequel takes the epistolary form. It provides the key for my creation of the Marquise de Merteuil. It demonstrates why the young Marquise-to-be throws off the constraints placed upon her sex, why she is motivated to compete with the young, male libertines of her day, why she reasons herself out of innocence towards her own compelling brand of sexual predation. My characterisation of the Marquise shows that not all libertines are men: '[I was] born to avenge my sex and to dominate yours' Les Liaisons Dangereuses: Letter 81. The exchanges between the young Marquise-to-be and the young Vicomte de Valmont reveal the beginnings of their dangerous attraction, their posturing, their power-play. The themes and devices of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the greatest libertine novel of all, are here reprised, but with the perspective of the era you inhabit. Liaisons of love and of cruelty are played out among the characters whose correspondence makes up this collection. My characters are influenced by the philosophers and thinkers of the ancien r�gime. The tussle between enlightenment and unreason involves them all. Stylistically it's elegant, diverse and rich and completely convincing as a product of its period. Within that chosen linguistic register Anselle Frѐre has managed to create distinctive character voices. I imagine it's pretty challenging to construct a compelling narrative in the epistolary style but Frѐre certainly pulled it off, and I suppose this is the bottom line - that it's a really good story.
